Diploma Course in Applied Gerontology(I/DIP/C2)
The Hong Kong Association of Gerontology is one of the pioneer providers of training courses in Hong Kong. It has 20 years of experience in offering professional training to professionals working in various elderly fields in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Institute of Gerontology will launch the Diploma Course in Applied Gerontology. This program is designed for professionals who are interested in developing a career specialized in working with older people. Participants from a variety of professional backgrounds may apply for the course which is designed to meet the diverse training needs of different professional disciplines including social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapist and other health related workers who are interested in aged care policies and practices.
AIMS The course aims to upgrade and extend the knowledge, skills and attitudes of professionals working with older people. On completion of 3 basic modules, participants can acquire Basic Certificate in Applied Gerontology. On completion of 3 basic modules and 3 advanced modules, participant can acquire Advanced Certificate in Applied Gerontology. On completion of 3 basic modules and 7 advanced modules, participant can acquire Diploma in Applied Gerontology.

PREREQUISITES AND REQUIREMENT: To be eligible for admission, a participant shall hold a professional qualification in either social work, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy or other allied health. A participant will normally be required to have post qualification practice in the residential care homes for the elderly, community service for the elderly or interested in aged care.
STRUCTURE AND PROGRAMME ASSESSMENT This part-time courses in modular form, consisting 3 basic modules and 10 advanced modules. There are three awards for the three stages of the programme:
Basic Certificate in Applied Gerontology This course is offered to participant to be completed in one to two years on a part-time basis. It consists of 3 basic modules and 54 hours. Each module consists of 18 hours.
Advanced Certificate in Applied Gerontology Following the completion of the Basic Certificate in Applied Gerontology, participants are required to undertake three advanced modules and 54 hours in one to two years on a part-time basis. Each module consists of 18 hours.
Diploma in Applied Gerontology Following the completion of the Advanced Certificate in Applied Gerontology, participants are required to undertake 4 advanced modules and 72 hours in one to two years on a part-time basis. Each module consists of 18 hours.
Assessments of the course may be assessed either through presentation required by course assignments, case study, problem-based assessment or project submission. Participants must have 80% attendance to be eligible for the assessment.

DAG01 Introduction to Applied Gerontology (Basic module) The module introduces core concepts and theories from a multidisciplinary perspective. It enables students to understand the dynamic interplay of knowledge, skills and values in effective professional practice in the health care, social work and social care fields. It identifies issues on the growth of the aging population, the needs of an ageing population, theories of ageing, social policy and services for older people. DAG02 Communication and Relationship Building with Older People (Basic module) This module aims to provide participants with opportunities to develop knowledge and skills on communication and forming relationships with older people. This would be achieved by introducing the concepts, theories and methods of communicating with older people. Additionally, participants will be engaged in class activities so as to bring the theoretical aspects of communication into practice. DAG03 Health and Disease in Aging (Basic module) This module introduces health and disease problems commonly occur among older people. Participants have to understand the causation, symptoms and types of health and disease problems encountered by older people. DAG04 Needs Assessment and ICP (Advanced module) This module is designed to provide participants with opportunities to develop knowledge and skills on geriatric assessment and designing individual care plans. This will be achieved by introducing the purposes of comprehensive geriatric assessment and different components of comprehensive geriatric assessment in physical, psychosocial, family network, lifestyle, nutritional, environmental, mental, functional and cultural assessment. DAG05 Case Management : Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) and Care Protocol in Aged Care (Advanced module) This module aims to introduce various case management concepts and models and its application in the local work settings; as well as equip knowledge and skills of the participants in development and use of care protocol in own care setting. DAG06 Basic Research Methods (Advanced module) This module is designed to provide participants an overview of research methods to social and health issues with special reference to gerontology. It covers various methodological issues in quantitative and qualitative research, with particular focus on research problem, research design, sampling methods, strategies for data collection and analysis. DAG07 Risk Management and Quality Improvement (Advanced module) This module aims to provide participants to understand on the concepts and theories in quality improvement and risk management. Besides, participants could apply risk management in work practice appropriately in order to improve the quality of elderly care. DAG08 Mental Health in Older Adult (Advanced module) This module explores the range of mental health problems commonly encountered in the elderly, from dementia, depression, suicidal behaviours, to other functional psychiatric disorders. Issued covered include the recognition of mental-health problems, their epidemiology, the assessment, pharmacological as well as non-pharmacological management. DAG09 Clinical Counseling Skills working with Elders and Families ( Advanced module) This module aims to introduce various micro counseling skills and techniques in working with the elderly and their families; in a clinical/ health care setting. DAG10 Palliative Care (Advanced module) This module aims to introduce the foundation principles of palliative care, symptom control and use of common drugs in end of life setting such as opioids. Participants will explore important clinical and ethical aspects at end of life, such as futility and withholding/withdrawing treatment, advanced directive and approach to issues on suicide and euthanasia. Psychospiritual care and bereavement support for older people and families will be introduced. Opportunities and challenges on delivery of palliative care at old age homes will also be discussed DAG11 Geriatric Rehabilitation (Advanced module) This module introduces the concepts of geriatric rehabilitation, problems encountered in rehabilitation process for the elderly and rehabilitation in residential care for the elderly like breathing problems, neurological problems, constipation and incontinence, fallers, skin problems and mails, behaviour and cognitive rehabilitation, etc. DAG12 Advanced Research Methods (Advanced module) This module introduces advanced research methods. Participants can apply the use of qualitative and quantitative research findings to improve care of elderly in practice, conduct research using qualitative and quantitative approaches, critique on the use of qualitative and quantitative research approaches, overcome and address ethical dilemmas in aged care research. Participants can develop a research topic to apply gerontology in work practice. DAG13 Quality of Life and Spiritual Care (Advanced module) This module introduces the concepts, principles and theories relating to quality of life and spiritual care.
COURSE FEES - Each module of study costs HK$2,200 for member and HK$2,500 for non-member. - Discount will be offered for the payment in advanced:
- The course fee includes costs of teaching and learning materials, lecture, examination and enrolment. - Unless with special reason, all fees paid are neither refundable nor transferable. (Application for refund must be in writing with the approval from the training committee of HKAG. Administrative cost of $200 will be charged.) - The course will not commence unless there are sufficient numbers of enrolled participants. AWARD OF CERTIFICATES: This programme leads to awards at three levels:
