DAG08: Mental Health in Older Adults
Aims This course explores the range of mental health problems commonly encountered in the elderly, from dementia, depression, suicidal behaviours, to other functional psychiatric disorders. Issues covered include the recognition of mental-health problems, their epidemiology, the assessment, pharmacological as well as non-pharmacological management.
Learning objectives At the end of the module, the participants will be able to: 1. Gain knowledge in demographic distribution, prevalence and incidence of various mental health problems in old age 2. Gain familiarity with clinical features, assessment and diagnostic criteria of mental disorders of old age 3. Develop skills in conducting mental status evaluations 4. Understand indications and potential adverse effects of pharmacological management 5. Gain knowledge in the range of non-pharmacological interventions commonly employed in this age group 6. Become familiar with various professional roles in mental health practice
Course Content This module consists of 9 sessions. Each session will last for 2 hours.
Teaching and learning methods Classroom teaching, case scenarios, video-shows and group discussion.

Medium of instruction The classes will be taught in Cantonese and supplemented with English. Teaching notes will be in either English or Chinese.
Class size Each class will comprise of 30 participants.
Assessment The assessment for this course comprises written examination (80%), The other (20%) is awarded for class attendance. Participants must have 80% attendance to be eligible for the assessment.
Award certificate A certificate will be awarded to participants who have attended at least 80% of the total training hours and satisfactorily completed the assessment.
Participants who have completed 3 basic courses and 7 advanced courses will be awarded "Diploma in Applied Gerontology"
Additionally, CNE/CPD/ CME points will be awarded by the professional associations accordingly
Application procedure
A completed application form must be accompanied with the following documents: photocopies of degree/diploma certificates and testimonials or other relevant evidence of the applicant’s working experience. Exemptions may be considered on an individual basis.
